Updated - October 22, 2026 at 09:19 PM. | New Delhi, October 22State-run Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) on Thursday reported a 6 per cent Y-o-Y decline in its consolidated net profit at around ₹ 3,625 crore during Q2 FY27 as the gains from higher refining margins were offset by losses from sale of petrol, diesel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
The PSU oil marketing company (OMC) had incurred a loss of around ₹ 12,265 crore on a sequential basis.
The OMC, which operates more than 25,000 fuel retail outlets nationwide, posted a consolidated total income of roughly ₹1.40 lakh crore in Q2 FY27, compared to ₹1.46 lakh crore in Q1 FY27 and ₹1.11 lakh crore in Q2 FY26.
It reported consolidated total expenses of ₹1.33 lakh crore in Q2 FY27 against ₹1.64 lakh crore in Q1 FY27 and ₹1.06 lakh crore in Q2 FY26.
Robust performance
HPCL said the results reflect resilient and robust performance by the refineries and the marketing divisions of the company in the midst of the ongoing West Asia crisis. Accruals under Project Samridhi 2.0 (the EBITDA improvement programme) stood at ₹327 crore, or around $0.18 per barrel, during H1 FY27.
The company’s average gross refining margin (GRM) during April-September in FY27 was $27.89 per barrel as against $5.95 a year ago. This is before factoring-in the impact of Special Additional Excise Duty and Road & Infrastructure Cess on export of select petroleum products, it said in its results filing on the BSE.
During April-September 2026 due to suppressed marketing margins on certain petroleum products, the profitability was impacted, it added.
The company’s marketing margins got impacted as PSU OMCs have been selling petrol, diesel and LPG below market rates to shield the common man from volatile prices due to the West Asia conflict.
HPCL told BSE that the cumulative negative buffer (unrecognised) on sale of LPG cylinders below market rate on September 30, 2026 is around ₹18,048.82 crore (March 31, 2026: around ₹12,798.67 crore & around ₹14,240.64 crore on September 30, 2025).
“Other expenses for April-September, 2026, includes around ₹313.80 crore (April-September 2025: around ₹798.18 crore) towards loss on account of foreign currency transactions and translations,” it added.
Refineries recorded a crude throughput of 6.20 million tonnes (mt) during Q2 FY27, operating at 100 per cent of the capacity. Sales, including exports, rose by 5.5 per cent Y-o-Y to 12.73 mt.
Its capex in Q2 FY27 stood at ₹2,085 crore (cumulative for H1 FY27: ₹3,819 crore), which focused on strengthening refining and marketing infrastructure, and improving operating efficiencies.
